Arbitration

Chris acts as Arbitrator or Independent Expert on rent review or lease renewal (through PACT) disputes on all types of retail properties in England and Wales.

Chris receives appointments either from the RICS, on whose panel he has been a member for over 25 years, or by agreement between the parties.  He has issued over 300 awards/determinations in that time, and offers a deep level of expertise in this field.  Being part of a small firm means Chris can offer a completely independent view, free from any conflicts of interest.

Property types vary from large food and non-food stores, to shop units in town centres, to restaurants and stores in central London.

Chris is one of only a small handful of Fellows of Arbrix, an organisation which looks after the training and general interests of all property arbitrators and independent experts across England and Wales.  He was chairman of the organisation for 4 years from 2018 to 2022, and has organised many daily conferences for Arbrix members in his role as both a committee member and chairman. He has spoken regularly at these events.

Chris is an ardent supporter of PACT (Professional Arbitration on Court Terms), a process which deals with lease renewal disputes.  He receives many appointments to act as a PACT arbitrator or expert, usually privately from the parties concerned.

Chris has also acted as arbitrator on other types of property disputes, such as rent abatement, consent for assignment, and disputes under the Pubs Code.  He has also published several arbitration awards under the provisions of the Commercial Rent (Coronavirus) Act 2022 relating to non-payment of rent during the Covid-19 pandemic.
